Trafford is part of Greater Manchester and is also a metropolitan borough. It’s part of one of the North West’s biggest cities, Manchester. In 2017 the estimated population of Trafford was 235,493 and it covers an area of 41 square miles (106 square kilometres). Within in this area of Trafford, there are two world famous sports grounds, both named Old Trafford. The most famous one is the home of Manchester United Football Club. Lancashire County Cricket Club’s ground is also located within Trafford and both of these regularly get tens of thousands of supporters watching them play.
Included within the borough of Trafford are the towns of Altrincham, Partington, Sale, Stretford and Urmston. When some municipal boroughs joined together in 1974, this made the metropolitan borough of Trafford. The areas that merged together where Altrincham, Sale, Stretford, Bowden, Hale and Urmston plus part of the Bucklow rural district. The northern and southern part of the area is split by the River Mersey, which runs through the borough.
Some parts of Trafford have evidence of Roman and Bronze Age activity with some castle remains found over the years. It also has over 200 listed buildings within the borough, most of these are in the rural area of Dunham Massey. There are many sporting grounds within the borough including the football grounds of Altrincham Football Club, Trafford Football Club and Manchester United F.C. A new Imperial War Museum was completed and opened in 2002, this is the Northern version for the main one in London.
The world famous Lowry theatre is also sited here, in the centre of the regenerated Trafford waterside area.
Trafford is the home of one of Britain’s largest shopping complexes, the Trafford Centre. The Trafford Centre is part of Trafford Park industrial estate and has a good economy and above average national weekly income which matches the City of Manchester. Trafford has a mixture of people from both working class and middle-class families, so has a good social circle between different backgrounds.
Trafford is represented in Parliament by three constituencies of Stretford and Urmston, Altrincham and Sale West and Wythenshawe and Sale East. This covers a lot of neighbouring Manchester. The current council for Trafford is run by Labour, they took over from the Conservatives in 2018 after they had control of the council for a number of years.
