Timperley is a village in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester. It is located 6 miles southwest of Manchester city centre and has excellent transportation links. The Manchester Metrolink tram service connects Timperley to Manchester city centre and the surrounding area. The A56 also leads directly to the city. With it’s position on the Bridgewater Canal and close to nearby Altrincham, this friendly community has become an attractive and sought after place to live.
Along with the neighbouring town of Altrincham, traditionally Timperley was an agricultural area and renowned for its market gardening of crops including Timperley Rhubarb and many vegetables. Timperley’s position on the Bridgewater Canal was instrumental and made transportation and sale of the crops to the nearby city of Manchester a success. During the Industrial Revolution, when the mills of Manchester were at the height of production, mill owners were looking for somewhere to live within easy reach of the city. The less polluted suburb of Timperley was an ideal location and many mill owners made it their home. In subsequent years the Bridgewater Canal was also used to transport coal and other heavy commercial goods from the surrounding area to Manchester. A far cry from its industrial past, the canal is now seen as a focus for leisure with many people using its tow paths for walking or cycling and the canal itself for fishing, rowing and canal boating.
Former residents of Timperley include comedy writer and actress Caroline Ahere and musician Ian Brown of The Stone Roses. Perhaps the most recognised person associated with Timperley is comedian Chris Sievey, better known as the character with a papier-mâché head, Frank Sidebottom, who died in 2010. A statue of Frank Sidebottom was unveiled in 2013 and can be found in the town centre.
