Telford is the largest town in Shropshire, and one of the fastest growing towns in the United Kingdom. It is a ‘new town’, formed in the 1960s and 1970s by identifying an area of land occupied by several close-lying small towns (Wellington, Dawley, Oakengates and Madeley). The areas between these towns were filled by either a large housing development or an industrial estate, to form a large circular conurbation. The centre of this circle was filled with a large shopping centre and various leisure facilities, including one of the few ice rinks in the area, where you can also watch music concerts, and a 170 hectare town park.
Originally to be called ‘Dawley New Town’, it was called Telford after Thomas Telford, the celebrated civil engineer responsible for many road and rail projects in the area.
Throughout the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, investment and expansion in Telford has continued apace, and the town grew both physically and economically. Alongside the historical towns already in place, there are now the major residential developments of Lawley, Priorslee, Brookside, Stirchley, Sutton Hill and Woodside, and business districts of Stafford Park, Hortonwood and Halesfield.
Just to the south of Telford, and close enough to be considered a suburb, is the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World heritage site. This contains the Iron Bridge, the first bridge of its kind in the world to be made out of iron. For this reason, the Ironbridge Gorge is known worldwide as the ‘birthplace of industry’.
To the west of Telford is The Wrekin, a hill of volcanic rock which rises 1300 feet above the Shropshire plain. Which can be seen from as far away as the Beetham Tower in Manchester. It is popular with hikers and walkers, and is an ideal spot to observe the majesty of the Welsh hills or to watch a sunrise or sunset.
