Swinton is a town in Salford, Greater Manchester. With its transport network and location, it serves as a commuter town to Manchester city centre which is approximately 4 miles away. The M60 also passes close by to Swinton. It has good rail links and the first guided busway in the North West which takes commuters directly to Manchester City centre in less than 15 minutes.
Swinton was historically a hamlet in Lancashire. Its main industry was farming and many locals turned to hand-loom woollen weaving, to supplement their earnings. The Industrial Revolution brought changes to Swinton with the introduction of collieries which supplied the coal needed for the nearby brick making and cotton spinning factories. Bricks manufactured in Swinton were used in the construction of the nearby Bridgewater Canal. By the mid 19th century, Swinton became an prominent mill town with new roads and railway networks built to support it. Like many others before it, the last coal mine in Swinton, Agecroft Colliery, closed in the early 1990’s. In 1934, the UK’s first intercity highway, the A580 better known as the East Lancs Road, was officially opened by King George V. The A580 terminates at Swinton and it is still a much used road today.
Swinton and its close neighbour Pendlebury is the choice of many young families to settle down. With its range of affordable housing, schools, parks, bars and restaurants there are plenty of amenities locally to keep people entertained, if they don’t wish to venture into the city. For those needing more choice than Swinton has to offer, Manchester city centre and the Trafford Centre are both just a 20 minute car journey away. The Trafford Centre is home to over 200 shops and services and its ocean liner based food court, The Orient, is Europe’s largest food court.
