Stretford is a town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, situated between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal. It’s located 4 miles south from Manchester city centre, 3 miles south from Salford and 4 miles northeast of Altrincham. Stretford has good transport links and is close to the M60, the A56 also gives easy access to Manchester city centre and the south. The Stretford Metrolink is part of the Manchester Metrolink tram network and the nearby Trafford Park railway connects Manchester to Liverpool. Manchester Airport is 9 miles south of Stretford.
Stretford, formerly an agricultural town, has undergone much change over the years. In the 19th century, Stretford was known as Porkhampton and was renowned for its pig production, which it supplied to nearby Manchester. It was also known for its large scale market-gardening of vegetables. In 1993, the rail freight terminal, known as the Trafford Park Euroterminal, opened. It has the capacity to handle 100,000 containers a year and along with many other industries based in this area, could not be more different from the agricultural past of Stretford.
Stretford is home to several famous sporting venues. Manchester United Football Club has had its home in Stretford since 1910, when the club moved to Old Trafford. The west stand of Old Trafford is still unofficially known as the Stretford End. Lancashire County Cricket Club, also known as Old Trafford, has had its home in Stretford since 1856. Another sporting venue in the area is the Stretford Sports Village, which is the home of the Trafford Athletic Club. It’s one of the UK’s top athletic clubs and many athletes who attend have gone on to compete at international level.
Many notable people have been born in Stretford over the years. It’s famously the birthplace of the artist L S Lowry, who was born here in 1887. The suffragette sisters, Emmeline and Sylvia Pankhurst, were also born in Stretford. It is also the birthplace of many musicians, Morrissey, Ian Curtis of Joy Division, Jay Kay of Jamiroquai and Martin Fry of ABC.
