The historical city sits astride the river Dee, close to the England/Wales border, on the western edge of the county of Cheshire. Chester is the county town and administrative centre of Cheshire, and its second largest conurbation (after Warrington).
Evidence has been found showing human activity in the area going back two millennia. Chester really began its development into an area of importance and power with the establishment of a fort by the Romans during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian, in AD79. Named ‘Deva’, the area would develop from just a military fort and garrison, into a major trade and civilian settlement area.
Following the expulsion of the invading Romans in the late seventh century, King Aethelred Of Mercia founded the Mister Church of Mercia, which would become the first Cathedral of Chester. The indigenous Angles extended and strengthened the walls around the city to protect it and themselves from groups of marauding Danes, who were attacking large swathes of the district from the East at this time.
Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, Chester became one of the last British cities to fall to the Normans. The new ruler, William the Conqueror, ordered the construction of a new castle, to both dominate and control the town, and also to take advantage of its geographical ability to oversee the border into Wales.
With its ever-growing strength and importance, demonstrated by its castle and cathedral, Chester was granted City status in 1541.
Throughout the almost-500 years since, Chester has continued to grow, expand and develop. Many industries have flourished here. Despite not being on the coast (and thanks to the width and depth of the river Dee), Chester was the major port for the North-West of England through the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, moving enormous quantities of exported goods to Ireland and beyond. Its status as a trading town inexorably grew, and following the industrial revolution, it became a manufacturer of steel, then cars, and later aircraft, which continue to be made at the Airbus plant to this day.
Another major business in Chester throughout the centuries has been watchmaking. In the 18th century Chester became known as a major production area for the manufacture of ‘rough’ watch movements (where a basic watch movement would be made by a watchmaker and then sold to a jeweller to be finished, regulated and fitted to a watch). Notable early exponents of this skill would be the Fletcher dynasty, clock and watchmakers in Chester for many years. Whilst, for the time, these watches would have represented the peak of technological achievement, they are a far cry from the Rolex watch of today.
Records show that many watchmakers registered and operated in Chester throughout this period. Chesters’ Assay office would also verify and mark watches made within the city and elsewhere. (These watches can be easily identified by the Chester assay ‘mark’, an upright sword between three wheat sheaves).
Watchmaking continues to thrive in Chester. You can buy newly manufactured watches made in Chester that have a dial made from the salvaged aluminium of a Spitfire fighter aircraft.
Chester is fortunate enough to nestle within a successful region of the country, and as such attracts a significant number of customers seeking the very best in wristwear. Due to this, Chester has a significant track record in the supply of Rolex and other high-quality Swiss watch brands.
