The resort town of Abergele sits on the north-west coast of Wales, midway between the larger touristy towns of Conwy and Rhyl. It sits on the A55, (the North Wales Expressway), which runs all the way from Holyhead to Chester. Whilst smaller than its neighbours, it is definitely a town to watch due to its charm and tranquillity.
Whilst originally formed as a monastic settlement and market town, Abergele is now primarily known as a seaside town and tourist destination, with its population practically doubling during the summer months. Much of the town is now occupied by small hotels and B&B’s, all kept in good repair and overseen by dedicated owners keen to keep a safe watch over their guests.
In recent years, the profile of Abergele has risen considerably due to it being home to Gwrych Castle, which has become home to the ITV programme ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’. Ever since the Coronavirus pandemic prevented international travel, the siting of the show moved from the Australian jungle to Abergele and has seen various celebrities leave their posh sports cars and Rolex watches at home, in exchange for a far more basic existence within the walls of the castle.
On the outskirts of Abergele lie two watch towers. Both built on high ground to offer extensive views over the local coast, Snowdonia and as far as the coast of Lancashire. Abergeles’ Tower Hill and Lady Emilys Tower were both constructed as defensive observation posts but are both now popular walking spots for tourists.
Near to Abergele, in an area kept private and protected, are a group of cliff caves that are home to the very rare Lesser Horseshoe Bat. Human activity and disturbance around these animals is discouraged, but a warden (known locally as the ‘Batman’) monitors their welfare.
