The town of Warrington in the Northwest of England is a hive of history, shopping and culture and is striving to become a city, having applied in 2021 as part of the Queens Jubilee celebration competition for city status which was open to towns in the UK. It has the fortune of being surrounded my major motorway links meaning that travel to the likes of Manchester, Liverpool, Macclesfield, Preston and even North Wales can be reached within around an hour by road or rail.
The shopping hub in the town is the Golden Square Shopping Centre which was officially opened by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh in 1979. The shopping centre has since been extended and is filled with over 130 fashion, jewellery & watch and beauty stores as well as a eateries. Away from the town centre you can find lots of independent boutiques and restaurants in nearby Stockton Heath. Warrington was also the destination chosen for the UK’s first Ikea store in 1987.
Warrington was the birthplace of Charles L Dodgson, who is most well known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll. He was of course made a household name with the popularity of his book, Alice’s adventures in wonderland. To commemorate the author, Daresbury church in Daresbury where the author was born, has a large stained-glass window depicting his beloved characters.
Closer to the town centre is another must see, the golden gates of Warrington Town Hall. The opulent gates were originally intended for the Norfolk Royal residence, Sandringham but were not shown to Queen Victoria for approval and were therefore left without a home. They were brought to Warrington and modified slightly. The Prince of Wales feathers that were originally central at the top of the gates were replaced with the Warrington coat of arms but there are still clear signs of the royal connection, the winged figures of Nike, the goddess of victory, are still depicted on the gates.
