Beechams pharmaceutical company was launched in St.Helens. Thomas Beecham, a shepherd from Oxford began by making herbal medication to treat his animals, he then developed this for treating human ailments and sold his pills from a market stall in Wigan and later moving on to St.Helens as a permanent base. Beechams clock tower, bult as part of the factory and offices in the mid 1880’s, still stands proudly in the town but no longer used for its original purpose.
Today, St.Helens is planning a huge regeneration project for its town centre to make it more sustainable, to introduce a thriving highstreet and to create more job opportunities for locals.
The towns ‘Dream’ sculpture, a 20 meter depiction of young girls head with her eyes closed as though dreaming, sits on the old Sutton manor colliery, an area that holds poignance with the ex-mining community. The sculpture came to be as a result of a tv competition in which Towns and cities were asked to apply to have an artist create a unique piece of public art for their town or city. St. Helens was selected and a panel made up of ex miners chose an artist to create their piece of art. Dream represents and town looking to its future but being mindful of its mining past.
