The Greater Manchester, former mill town of Bolton has a hugely popular market, a museum that boasts the largest Egyptian exhibit outside of London, one of the oldest libraries in the country and has given us several famous inventors, brands, and actors.

The claim to stage and screen fame doesn’t end there, the incredible curved buildings and cobbled streets of Le Mans Crescent have played its part as a backdrop for hit drama Peaky Blinders.
One of the most fascinating stories of any Boltonian is that of John Harwood, who in 1928 Invented the self-winding watch movement. The vessel for this movement was a watch which had a rotating bezel in place of a typical crown on the side of the case. Swiss watch makers Blancpain used Harwoods movement but unfortunately it was incredibly difficult to reproduce in large numbers, which lead to Harwoods self-winding watch company ceasing trading within just a few years.
Incredibly Rolex printed an apology to Mr Harwood in a 1956 edition of the Sunday express after they had claimed to have created the ‘first’ self-winding movement. In the publication they gave him full credit for being the creator.
Bolton is also the home of sports brand Reebok which was founded by cobbler in the town and bakery Warburtons who produce over two million products every day.
