Blackburn Cathedral has been one of the most famous landmarks in Blackburn since being built in 1926. It was a religious site a long time before it was a cathedral. Before 1926, it was the parish church of St Mary which was then upgraded when the Diocese of Blackburn was created. The earliest record of the building being used as a religious site was in 1086, but the foundation of the building is said to date back to the year 596.
Anyone around the area of Blackburn, will have heard of Darwen Tower which is actually named Jubilee Tower. It is known for its unusual octagonal shape and the views overlooking the town from the top of Darwen hill. The name comes from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee as it was built to commemorate the occasion. The tower is loved by many locals in the area and this was seen when there were fears of the tower having to shut in 2000 due to fears of it being unsafe for visitors.
