Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-François Cartier, a master jeweller. Cartier has always been regarded as a high end jeweller, creating exquisite jewellery. Then in the 19th Century, they began making pocket watches and necklaces with watch movements.

Soon after in 1904, Louis Cartier made significant steps forward in designing the first modern wristwatch. Louis innovated from the pocket watch by including a wrist strap, creating the first wrist strap. Louis created this watch for his friend, Alberto Santos-Dumont and subsequently the range of watches named the Santos was born.

Cartier continued to make wristwatches and introduced a wider range of watch with edgy and new designs, many of which have become iconic within the range. Iconic Cartier watches include Tank, Ballon Bleu, Pasha, Roadster and Santos.

Further to Cartier’s developments in watch making, they released the a new watch movement in 2011 with the Calibre 1904MC. This was a significant development as it was the first time in Cartier’s history that they had used their own manufactured movement. It was a self-winding movement that was initially fitted in the Calibre de Cartier, and later included in the 2013 chronograph version, Calibre de Cartier Chronograph and later in the Calibre de Cartier Diver launched in 2014.
