The Cartier Tank has become a mainstay in the watch world and models within the range are one of the brand's most popular timepieces with their customers.
As with all Cartier Tank watches, the Américaine took its lead from the original design of the Tank Normale by Louis Cartier and was seen to be an updated version of the Tank Cintrée
Upon its original release in 1989, the Américaine offered a larger, sleek rectangular-shaped case, and although it had a flat case back, the watch displayed a stunning curved design. The Américaine still used the signature details from the original Tank, its roman numerals, and train track style minute markers on its classical dial with the blue accent of the hands and stone set crown.
The Américaine came at a time when the desire for a larger style of watch was growing, so the model was released as a more fashionable, statement piece by the brand.
Cartier released the steel version of the Américaine in 2017 to mark the Cartier Tank's 100th anniversary, the watch was available in 3 case sizes at this time.
The Cartier Tank Américaine will see a collection of 11 new and redefined timepieces introduced in 2023 with a mini, small, and large options. All case sizes will have a more defined curve and a generally slimmed-down profile. The two smaller sizes will be fitted with a quartz movement and the larger size will be fitted with a new slimmer automatic calibre 1899 MC movement.
