Caernarfon, lying on the North-West coast of Wales, is a royal town, market centre and port. Its specific location, protected from the Irish Sea by the island of Anglesey, makes it an ideal location for water traffic, although the military and trading ships of yesteryear are now predominately replaced by yachts, small boats and leisure craft.
The town itself is dominated (especially when approached from the sea) by the magnificent (and intact) castle. Certainly the most impressive castle in Wales, and second only to Windsor in the UK in terms of condition and grandeur, Caernarfon castle was built in the 13th century following the English overthrow of Wales. The polygonal towers of the castle, and the banded design of the accompanying town walls, are said to be based on the walls surrounding the ancient city of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in Turkey. In 1969, the main courtyard of the castle was used as the site for the investiture of Prince Charles as the new Prince of Wales. (Rumours abound that Charles broke royal protocol and wore his favourite Rolex watch – hidden by his robes – throughout the ceremony). Continuing the royal connection, Caernarfon was also the birthplace of Edward II of England.
The popular Netflix series ‘The Crown’ has been filmed in Caernarfon when recreating the investiture of Prince Charles at Caernarfon Castle. Stars including Olivia Coleman descended upon the town to film the episode which included a recreation of the procession through Caernarfon.
A great many notable people can name Caernarfon as their hometown or place of birth. Unsurprisingly, Wales being Wales, a great number of talented singers and musicians were born here. Professional sportsmen and sportswomen also abound. Amongst these are Sir Dave Brailsford, the phenomenally successful cycling coach, who led Team GB to a plethora of gold medals across several Olympic games. Locals recall the hours spent by Brailsford out on the track, trusty Omega timepiece in hand, pushing his charges further and further.
Sir Davids Omega is not the only notable watch associated with Caernarfon. The North Wales Chronicle newspaper reported the sale of a rare Rolex watch (originally purchased for £70) for a then record £210,000. The ever-increasing value of Rolex watches never wanes.
Mae'r dref ei hun yn cael ei dominyddu (yn enwedig yn edrych o'r môr) gan y castell godidog (a chyfan). Yn sicr y castell mwyaf trawiadol yng Nghymru, ac yn ail yn unig i Windsor yn y DU o ran cyflwr a mawredd, adeiladwyd castell Caernarfon yn y 13eg ganrif gan Edward I o Lloegr, ynghyd a castelli Biwmares, Conwy ac Harlech. Dywedir bod tyrau amlochrog y castell, a chynllun bandiau muriau'r dref sy'n cyd-fynd ag ef, yn seiliedig ar y waliau o amgylch dinas hynafol Constantinople (Istanbwl bellach) yn Nhwrci. Ym 1969, defnyddiwyd prif gwrt y castell fel safle ar gyfer arwisgiad y Tywysog Charles fel Tywysog Cymru newydd. (Mae llawer o sibrydion bod Charles wedi torri'r protocol brenhinol ac wedi gwisgo ei hoff oriawr Rolex - wedi'i chuddio gan ei wisg - trwy gydol y seremoni). Gan barhau â'r cysylltiad brenhinol, roedd Caernarfon hefyd yn man geni Edward II o Loegr.
Mae cyfres boblogaidd Netflix ‘The Crown’ wedi cael ei ffilmio yng Nghaernarfon wrth ail-greu arwisgiad y Tywysog Charles yng Nghastell Caernarfon. Daeth sêr gan gynnwys Olivia Coleman draw i’r dref i ffilmio’r bennod oedd yn cynnwys ail-greu’r orymdaith trwy Gaernarfon.
Gall llawer iawn o bobl nodedig enwi Caernarfon fel eu tref enedigol. Nid yw'n syndod, a hithau'n Gymru, fod nifer fawr o gantorion a cherddorion dawnus wedi'u geni yma; ac llu o ddynion a merched chwaraeon proffesiynol hefyd. Ymhlith y rhain mae Syr Dave Brailsford, yr hyfforddwr seiclo hynod lwyddiannus, a arweinwyr Tîm Prydain Fawr i fedalau aur ar draws sawl gêm Olympaidd. Mae pobl leol yn cofio'r oriau a dreuliwyd gan Brailsford allan ar y trac, darn amser dibynadwy Omega mewn llaw, gan wthio ei gyhuddiadau ymhellach ac ymhellach.
Nid Syr Davids Omega yw'r unig oriawr nodedig sy'n gysylltiedig â Chaernarfon. Adroddiad papur newydd y North Wales Chronicle fod oriawr Rolex brin (a brynwyd yn wreiddiol am £70) wedi'i gwerthu am £210,000 - y swm uchaf erioed. Fel mae'r dywediad yn mynd: nid yw gwerth cynyddol oriawr Rolex byth yn pylu.
