The name ‘Blackburn’ refers not only to the great northern town but it is also a fairly popular surname within the north of England.

Anglo-Saxon in origin, the word Blackburn is derived from an old english word burn, which meant stream, mostly referring to a darker area of the stream, where the water was somewhat dark and muddy. So the name roughly translates to Black Stream.
Strangely the origins of the naming of the town have historians divided. One suggestion is that it was originally a settlement in the Blakewater Valley. Others suggest that the Olde-English word for bleach could be forming the other half of the name and is a reference to the bleaching process used in the textile industry of the area which dates back to the 13th century. However the most commonly suggested and straight-forward origins for the name could be from a small rivulet near the town which was in ancient times known as Blakeburn, also said to be a home to a Roman built castle.

Dating back to the year 1206, the earliest record of the Blackburn surname was of Henry de Blackeburn who was documented in the Curia Regis Rolls, which was a record of those who served on the kings council in England and France of the day. Later there was a Willelmus de Blackburn listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax records of 1379 and a John de Blakeburne in the Preston Guild Rolls of 1397. Nowadays the surname is frequently seen in our Time-Piece stores as many customers share this historic name throughout the North West. The modern day spelling of the name follows the town itself however this was not always the case. Early spelling, especially in the pre-literate Middle Ages was often recorded as it was heard. Variations would include: Blackbyrne, Blackburn, Blackborn, Blagburn, Blackbryne to list just a few. Today most names tend to have a most popular and recognised spelling so it is more common to see more often. However if you have ever had your name spelled wrong on your takeaway coffee cup then you will surely understand the vast variations of a single name of the past!
