Skagen – the Skaw – is a small, picturesque fishing village situated where the northern-most tip of the Danish peninsula known as Jutland bends to the east and breaks the surging waters of the Kattegat and Skagerak Seas. The beauty of Skagen, helped by the very special qualities of the natural light found in this region, is simply breathtaking and for centuries the village of Skagen and its pretty, white sandy beaches have attracted artists from all over the world. The company symbol represents the unique meeting point of two seas. Skagen, with its unique charm, continues to be the inspiration for all Skagen Denmark products.

Founded in 1989, Skagen Designs Ltd., makers of Skagen watches, is an international group based in Reno, Nevada. It all started when Henrik and Charlotte Jorst moved from their native Denmark to the United States to follow a dream of owning and running their own business. Shortly after they arrived some samples of gift watches were sent to them from a Danish colleague who wanted the couple to build a market for them in the USA. They decided to build the brand with their own ideas and designs of fashion watches, only to find that corporate buyers liked the designs but told the couple that rather than just offer the watches with the company logo branding they should be selling the watches under a brand name.

In response to this they produced eight hundred watches in four unique designs under the handle Skagen Denmark and this first batch of watches quickly sold out. The following year they designed a further thirty new models. The company was further helped when a large mail order catalogue took a chance and put the Skagen women watches on the back of the special Father’s Day edition and the total stock sold out. Skagen Designs was founded on the principle that high quality, beautifully designed objects could be created at affordable prices.
In 1995 Bloomingdales became the first major department store to take on the Skagen Denmark watches on a trial basis and sold out in a single day. Eighty stores in Denmark began selling Skagen watches and a new office was opened in Denmark to set up ECU distribution.

By 1996 Skagen Denmark started selling their products in the United Kingdom, followed by Germany and the Netherlands in the year 2000. In 1999 Skagen Designs was named in the Inc. 500 as one of the fastest growing small businesses in the United States. In 2000 Skagen Designs won the prestigious Blue Chip Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Mass Mutual Financial Group. This award was presented to companies that had overcome significant obstacles to succeed in business.

In 2007 Skagen Denmark launched a stainless steel, contemporary and organic line of jewellery. It was also the year the Skagen Swiss Movement Collection of watches was launched. The Skagen Denmark Sport line was expanded in 2008.

Skagen Designs now has offices in the US, Denmark and Hong Kong and business continues to expand in Europe and the Asia Pacific region. There are two flagship stores in Denmark, one in Skagen and the other in Copenhagen. The Skagen Denmark product proves to be a top-seller in many markets including Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. The brand now offer more than 250 watch designs which are sold in more than 5000 stores, in over 60 countries worldwide.

In 2009 Skagen Designs celebrated its 20th anniversary and designed a limited edition 20 Year Anniversary watch.
