Donna Karan began her career as an assistant designer with Anne Klein in the late 1960's, later becoming associate designer in 1971. Anne Klein died in 1974 and the Japanese Takihyo Corporation became the new owner making Donna Karan and Louis Dell’Ollio the new head designers, together winning the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award in 1977 and again in 1982. Donna Karan left Anne Klein in 1984 and started her own business along with her then husband Stephan Weiss. She quickly became known for her very successful Essentials line which included seven clothing items that could be mixed and matched to create a completely integrated wardrobe. Donna Karan created numerous smart monotone clothing lines that became very popular with sophisticated women in the business world.

In 1988, Donna Karan created the new DKNY brand, a less expensive 'lifestyle diffusion' range of Donna Karan clothing designs. In 1990, DKNY jeans were launched, followed in 1992 with DKNY for men with the Council of Fashion Designers of America subsequently naming her Menswear Designer of the Year. During this period Donna Karan was also named Womenswear Designer of the Year in 1990 and 1996. In 1997 Donna Karan quit as CEO of the company, but now acts as chairwoman and designer in charge of the Donna Karan New York line. In 2001 the company was bought by French luxury conglomerate, LVMH. Since 2002 the Donna Karan New York collection has been designed by Peter Speliopoulos and Donna Karan. The DKNY brand is now designed exclusively by Jane Chung.

Based in Manhattan, New York, the company now has many stand-alone DKNY stores worldwide. The DKNY brand is more about a brand lifestyle with each part of the range coming together to form a distinct style.
